What I'm Working On
I paint faces because that's where the real story is. Not the masked version—the real one. I like to push the parts people don't usually show. The brushwork is loose and visible on purpose. I'm not trying to hide the process. Every stroke stays and is built upon layer by layer. You can see where I changed my mind, where I pushed the paint around almost carelessly, where I worked something out. That's part of it. The lighting does the heavy lifting. I use stark contrasts—light against dark—because that's how I understand emotion. What's revealed, what's hidden. The face emerges from shadow the same way memories do. Some things clear, some things not. I continuously learn from each new portrait. Figuring out the best way to capture what a face can hold each time I'm in front of the easel.
