Building the habit of daily painting

In my efforts to find what I enjoy painting the most and to keep things interesting for me while painting from life I recently started doing still life paintings, some of my first still life paintings ever actually. Coming from a background of graffiti I had never even thought of attempting one. I surprised myself the other day when I set up a still life scene of an apple! With a strong light from the right and my palette ready, I gave myself an hour to finish it! It’s my favourite painting I’ve done in 15 years lol. I had a breakthrough in my brushwork and achieved a loose painting style I’ve been going for, all from a simple painting of a singular apple. So what inspired this was that I found a book online through a pinterest post called “daily painting “ by Carol Marine and the idea behind it is to do a small painting every single day on something like a 6x6” canvas and give yourself about 1-2 hours to finish then move on. Small paintings like this mean there is little commitment, less worry about doing a bad painting and more experimentation. And the best part is that you improve at hyper speed.

So I’ve started setting up a still life at night and waking up at 5am, with the coffee on auto start, and heading down to the easel, awesome feeling to have painting be the first part of my day. So far it’s working and I’ve done more paintings now than I have last year, I’m at three 5am mornings a week so far but sights set on daily. Here’s a few pics :
